A birth doula is a non-medical professional who provides informational, emotional and physical support to a client and their family before, during and after birth to help ensure that the client is able to advocate for themselves, allowing them to have the birth experience they desire. Doulas have existed in some cultures for centuries, particularly among Indigenous communities.
Numerous studies conducted over the past 40 years have proven that when a person is supported by a doula during birth, they are "less likely to require a cesarean birth or pain medication, and more likely to give birth spontaneously, have a shorter labor, and feel satisfied with their birthing experience (Robles-Fradet and Greenwald)."
