Hello, my name is Isabel Rush. I am based in Coatesville, Pennsylvania (an hour outside of Philadelphia), and my service range is 50 miles. My service range includes Philadelphia, PA; Wilmington, DE; Camden, NJ; Lancaster, PA; Reading, PA; and Aberdeen, MD. I was inspired to become a birth doula because doulas offer something unique, unwavering support to their clients throughout pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. I am currently pursuing a birth doula certification with the nonprofit organization DONA International. I recently graduated from a liberal arts college where I majored in Spanish and Portuguese and minored in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Through my focus on Spanish and studying abroad in Spain, I discovered a passion for languages and developed cultural awareness, or the ability to recognize that our own values, beliefs and perceptions are influenced by our culture. My minor in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies provided me with a comprehensive understanding of how different systems and institutions within societies are intertwined and function at a national and global level.
Thanks to my liberal arts background, I learned the importance of educating myself through research, and I will ensure that you have access to the most recent evidence-based information to help you throughout this process. I will approach our work together through your specific individual and cultural lens because my goal is to help you have the positive birth experience you desire, where you are in charge, respected, and listened to by everyone present.
The word "querencia" was adopted from the Spanish language into English and means "a place from which one's strength is drawn, where one feels at home; the place where you are your most authentic self (Mak)." The word's powerful definition and its dual meanings in Spanish and English spoke to me because my goal as a birth doula is to create a space where people of all backgrounds and languages feel safe, accepted and empowered.
As a first-time mom, I did not have any foundation in the labor process or techniques. Isabel went above and beyond, providing a comprehensive approach to preparing me for the labor and birth process. Above all, Isabel gave me all the tools I needed to advocate for myself and be confident in my decisions.
I could not rate Isabel any higher – her knowledge base, professionalism, demeanor and calm presence under pressure was exactly what I needed to feel and be prepared. Any to-be mom would be lucky to have her services!
